Mental health has become a important role in today’s students lives because it reflects their mental ability, confidence, and overall well-being. Nowadays, mental health problems are increasing day by day among students and they are facing a serious issues in their performance, especially those who are pursuing professional courses like law.

Law is a prestigious course. As a teacher at Biyani Law College, I have seen when students enter law college, they usually carry big dreams with them about their future some wants to become a judge, some aspire to be successful advocates, while others wants to build a career in academics. Law students have to manage academics, internships, competitions, and future career planning together at the same time. However, no one notice the pressure they face during their college journey. Many students silently struggle with anxiety and stress in order to achieve success.

Academic Pressure in law schools

Law students have a very busy academic routine. They have to study multiple subjects, understand complex legal concepts, analyse case studies, and regularly attend classes. Along with this, they have to participate in moot courts, complete assignment on time, attend seminars, internships, take part I leg aid activities and do research work on regular basis.

Doing multiple things together becomes very difficult for many students and often makes them mentally exhausted.

Due to long hours of study and the pressure of completing deadline work, they barely get enough sleep or time to relax. Even after completing one task, they get another task. As a result, their personal life, daily routine, and mental health get disturbed. Over time, all these pressures negatively affect the mental health of many students and they won’t be in such position to perform well in academics.

Competition, Comparison and Effect of social media

Competition is another major reason for mental stress among law students. In most law colleges, students constantly compare themselves with others on the basis of marks, internships, communication skills, and achievements. This continuous comparison creates pressure to perform better all the time. Many students experience a fear of failure by seeing other students a performing well. All the time they are worried about succeeding in competitive exams, getting good markes, performing well in over all academics and fulfilling their family’s expectations. Due to this, they often overwork themselves and ignore their emotional well-being. Instead of enjoying the learning process, they remain continuously worried about results and future success.

Social media has also increased pressure on students. Nowadays, students constantly seeing posts about others’ achievements, internships, and success stories. Seeing such content again an again can makes many students feel that they are falling behind in life. However, Social media often shows only the positive side of people’s lives. It does not show their struggles, failures, or stress. Many students forget this reality and start comparing their own journey with others. Such comparisons affect their self-confidence and create unnecessary mental pressure.

Mental Health Issue Faced by Law Students

Due to performing multiple task in academics, some of the students face anxiety, stress, and lack of sleep. Many students stop showing interest in social activities and prefer to stay alone. They also become irritated, tired, and are unable to focus properly on their studies as a result of this they start losing interest in studies. Mental stress does not affect only studies, but also harms physical health. When students remain stressed for a long period, it becomes difficult for them to stay motivated and positive all the time. Unfortunately, many students do not discuss about their problems because they feel the will be judged by others.

Responsibility of Education Institution

In education institutions Colleges and teachers play an significant role in supporting students. Educational institution Biyani Law College focuses on to create an environment where students feel comfortable discussing their mental health problems without any fear or hesitation and ensure themselves that they will not be judged by anyone. Education institution should conduct counselling sessions and awareness programmes so that students can openly share and discuss their problems, what they are facing and how they are dealing.

Teachers should help them how to deal all the problems and challenges in life and how to manage their academics pressure and make them understand that education is not just a competition but it’s a whole learning process. Instead of creating fear and pressure, colleges should focus on helping students to grow emotionally, academically and mentally in life.
